Near – Middle Future:
The Dodo will become synonymous with the Phoenix.
The Dodo will be successfully cloned to repopulate the areas it once inhabited.
Soon we will know enough about genes sequences and allele variations such that talented scientists will be able to riff off of an existing genetic sequence – creating alternate viable sequence using common gene variants – much in the way the jazz musicians of today improvise in the middle of well known tunes.
To re-populate an extinct species, the complete DNA of only a few individuals will be necessary; and more individuals can be made using variations on their genetic themes.
The Dodo will be transformed from a symbol of humanity’s failure, to one of hope, and the triumph of human ingenuity over extinction.
And it will be good.
(Guard your museum samples carefully – don’t let them deteriorate! We will be using them soon.)
